Steps to Becoming a Caregiver

What is a Caregiver?

A designated caregiver is a person, at least 21 years old, who assists up to five (5) registered qualifying patients with their medical use of cannabis. Caregivers support patients by helping them obtain and administer their medicine in compliance with the Mississippi Medical Cannabis Program (MMCP). 

Note: For minor patients, the caregiver must be a parent or legal guardian with primary custody.

How to Apply to Be A Caregiver

Step 1

Patient Certification & Designation

The patient must be certified by a healthcare practitioner, registered with the MMCP, and designate you as their caregiver using the notarized Designation of Caregiver Form – see step 3.

Step 2

Register & Apply Online 

Create a caregiver account and complete the application on the MSDH Licensing Portal online or through the MS Medical Cannabis Program App.

Step 3

Submit Required Documentation 

Caregiver applicants are required to submit the Patient’s MMCP ID # and upload:

Complete Background Check

This involves mailing a physical fingerprint card to the MSDH Fingerprint Unit, using the code MC4200015.

Pay Fees

Potential Caregivers are required to pay two non-refundable state application fees. The caregiver application requires two separate fees to be paid before approval: 1) $25 Application Fee  2) $37 Background Check Fee.

Step 6

Await Approval

Applications are typically reviewed within 30 days. Upon approval, caregivers will receive their Designated Caregiver ID card via email.
